A Fulfilling Life, Shyam Benegal and 'The Essence'
Dr. Ajoy Lal Dutta

Creativity is a great capability and a blessing of human life. Creative people are society's greatest asset. Because of them, the world is made ever new and beautiful. Therefore, in the interest of sustaining and nurturing creativity, people should be taught the skills of a fulfilling life. These words are from the book 'Gratitude: A Science for Life and Education' by Dr. Pranjal Buragohain, who teaches in the Department of Education at Dibrugarh University. In his native area of Subahi, in the foothills along the Arunachal Pradesh border in Assam's Dhemaji district, he has also established a school that is exceptional in its own way, named Vidya – The Living School. The initiative, which has taken steps to educate children well in the art of living, the environment and culture, has drawn the special attention of the aware public and received praise and due recognition. The book speaks of sowing, through positive education, the seeds of the desire and the art of living life beautifully in the minds of children and adolescents. On the other hand, the world's industrial sector is now moving towards Industry 5.0. Technology is now racing ahead to develop 'artificial intelligence' by training computers to think like the human mind, and to automate rule-based and routine tasks by having them performed by trained computers. The new formula OT + IT = IIoT, that is, Operating Technology + Information Technology = Industrial Internet of Things, is developing rapidly. Through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI & ML), a tide of massive change is being felt across manufacturing, service industries and beyond. History repeats itself: just as people were gripped by mass fear during the Industrial Revolution that machines would snatch away their work and leave them jobless, in the last century people were struck by a fever of fear that computers would eat up human jobs. Yet it turned out that India was, in fact, able to create employment for many crores of people through computer-based and computer-assisted service industries. Similarly, through the changes brought about by building UIs (user interfaces) and software for industrialisation, business, fintech and more, we have witnessed a sweeping transformation of commerce into app-, website- and portal-based forms. Now AI is replacing UI, and questions have begun to arise: will artificial intelligence make computers alone write programs in place of humans in the UI industry? Will machine learning learn everything and make people dependent on machines' answers instead of on other people? The jobs and centres of the former call centres are now easily handled by automated chatbots, automated voice responses and automated CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software, so the demand for the 'human resources once required' in those service centres is surely disappearing. Large Language Models (LLMs) built through machine learning by training on structured and unstructured data, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, can handle work such as writing, essays, summaries and presentations. They can also easily create photos, illustrations, videos and more as the user commands. In doing so, they pose a new kind of threat to creativity and to those who are professionally engaged in creative work. Once again, that historical apprehension has raised its head in the human mind in a new form, this time as a new battle of ideas: human intelligence versus the artificial intelligence of machines. On a personal note, while studying the potential applications of artificial intelligence in professional industrial settings and preparing a practical roadmap for them, I have often been stirred by thoughts about 'creativity and the intoxication of living meaningfully', and about how technology will change our environment in the days to come. Here, I would like to mention two books I have picked up: one is Cal Newport's 'Digital Minimalism', which stresses 'Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World', and the other is 'AI to A+' by Shanu Shah, on mastering the art of AI content crafting. The two books present two contrasting perspectives! Amid all this, the news of the passing of the renowned Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal shook me, and to savour his body of work, I took a glimpse into the world of cinema he created. Among his films is 'Susman' (The Essence), made in 1987 and invited to the London Film Festival. It depicts the storm created by the arrival of textile machines and power looms in the world of handloom weaving, and the challenges that weaving and spinning cooperatives faced in the midst of it. Through Om Puri's outstanding performance as a highly skilled craftsman and weaver, the film beautifully portrays a life of struggle. Set against the exquisite handwoven saris of Andhra Pradesh, it shows people crushed by poverty yet striving to preserve an art handed down over several generations. Neena Gupta plays a modern designer who is deeply sensitive to this traditional art, its creation and its unique designs. She opposes the mindset that would call the weavers mere labourers and instead recognises them as highly skilled artisans, or Master Craftsmen. These artisans keep their traditional craft alive by toiling day and night for very low wages. On one front, they fight against their own poverty; on another, they battle the pressure of middlemen who treat exploitation as the essence of trade; and on yet another, they feel helpless in the face of the massive propaganda that the onslaught of machines will wipe out the handloom industry. Amid this conflict, the film successfully portrays the weaving of each thread, carried on through worry and the pressures of life, as a prayer to God (Work is worship), inspired by the dohas of Kabir Das. Saint Kabir, a poet who was a handloom weaver by profession, is used here as a powerful metaphor. In the end, recognised as a unique craftsman by virtue of his exquisite creations and unceasing dedication, Ramulu (Om Puri) is invited to Paris. In his conversation with a French journalist in the world's fashion capital, the answers to all this conflict and apprehension seem to emerge. Asked whether he is happy with his circumstances in life, Ramulu replies that he is happy holding on to the craft handed down by his forefathers! Then comes the question: is the craft not in danger of dying as India becomes more industrialised, and will this art be wiped out by the onslaught of machines? Ramulu answers simply: 'If life goes on beautifully and happily with this very craft, why should we chase machines at all? How could we ever get from a machine the joy and satisfaction that one gets from working with one's hands?' The sensitive designer, Neena, sums up the essence of it all as follows: 'Obviously, he will not give up his craft for any mechanical job, and that's why we must make space for creative persons like him, so that they can perform even in an industrialised society. There must be a method by which a constant and growing market is made available for the crafts that are created by working with their own hands. And this must be combined with usefulness and aesthetic appreciation. A person who is involved in the whole creative process of creating a beautiful piece of cloth should not be induced to perform mechanically repetitive functions, which are a tiny fraction of the whole process. The concept of contemporary life does not provide the satisfaction of creative work to most people, which leads to a great sense of alienation and eradication. Should we allow the remaining craftsmen to die out as a historical anachronism?' These words bring out the challenge and conflict that the age of technology poses to traditional art and creativity that cannot keep pace with the times. Yet it also becomes clear that mechanically repetitive work is only a small part of the vast expanse of both creation and industry, and it is in this space that artificial intelligence has now set foot. There is still a great deal of work in commerce, employment and industry that cannot be done without human intellectual knowledge and intelligence, and the same holds true for the vast field of creativity and art. However, how far the reach of artificial intelligence will extend, and how quickly the spread of advancing technology will shrink the boundaries of the work of the hands and the work of the mind, will remain an ever-swaying question for modern society. The satisfaction found in the 'confluence of diversity' and in the 'ever-new resources of singular, unique creation' that lie within the creations of the human mind and hands, along with the appreciation for those creations, will endure. Human society, too, will surely be compelled to set certain boundary conditions on the expansion of technology. Creativity is a great capability and a blessing of human life, and it is equally certain that civilisation, too, will face a challenge in sustaining it.
