I thought DNA does matter!
Translation:
Restless Days and Bob Marley’s DNA
Caught up in the whirl of life, time has been slipping by at a relentless pace. It has been ages since I last wrote anything; the habit itself seems to have quietly slipped away. These days, the hours drift past as I scroll through social media rather than write. Beyond dusting the books on my shelf to keep them looking cared for, my reading habit has all but faded too. Not that I go entirely without the pleasure of the odd chapter or short story now and then. But spending most of my days buried in technical manuals, self-help books, professional material and management e-books leaves my eyes tired by evening. In a life that has settled into routine, what keeps me going are the weekends, and the occasional meal shared with friends and family.
Amid all this busyness, a few things keep coming back to me. One is something the senior lady at our training academy told us at the very start of our careers: 'In the rush of doing what seems urgent, much that is truly important is left undone.' So, every now and then, we must pause. We must rest. We must take stock of the things that truly matter over the long arc of life — the things that can raise its quality — and, if they have been left lying idle, find a way to nudge them a step forward. That is why falling ill and being confined to bed can sometimes feel like a blessing in disguise. It gives us a chance to measure how we are really living, and to reclaim the good habits that have slipped through our fingers. And it is for this very rest that we need a home — a shelter where we can regather our strength before setting out once more.
At other times, I remember a college friend who, at the height of his self-assurance, fancied himself a Casanova and loved wearing a T-shirt that read, 'So much girls, so little time!' We each have our own obsessions. But caught in a rat race that runs alongside time's relentless march, I too sometimes stop and think: 'So many wonderful books, so many beautiful songs and stories, so many great films, so many lovely places!' When will I ever watch them all? When will I ever travel? The wheel of life turns so fast that December seems to arrive before January has even ended! Still, I try at least to catch the world's finest films, one or two at a time, after checking their reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
The COVID lockdown, though, gave me the chance to watch a good many of the world's best films. 'Pelé: Birth of a Legend', which I saw then, left me genuinely inspired. I watched a lot of Korean cinema too, and among those I especially liked 'Barefoot Dreams', a simple, heartfelt football film that was once South Korea's entry to the Oscars. And today, I watched 'Bob Marley: One Love (2024)', the biopic now streaming on Netflix. After watching a biographical film, I usually go online to dig a little deeper into the life behind it.
It was heartening to learn that the musical genius Bob Marley's 11 children, though born to mothers from different countries, continue to keep the legacy of his reggae music alive and thriving. By my count, his children have won a remarkable 16 Grammy Awards between them! DNA, I thought, really does matter!
That set me wondering what had become of Mahatma Gandhi's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What I discovered is that they are simply absent from the cheap, sensational headlines of our news media. Yet, at home and abroad, a family tree now six generations deep continues to stand tall, its members holding many distinguished positions. In India, attempts to portray the family have largely been limited to crowd-pleasing public narratives — the play 'Gandhi Vs Gandhi', or the film 'Gandhi, My Father', about Harilal, the son who clashed with his father. There is even a biography, 'Gandhiji's Lost Jewel: Harilal Gandhi', written by his great-granddaughter Nilam Parikh. All this made me realise that even amid life's relentless pace, we need to pause now and then — and that there is a joy all its own in picking up the thread of a new subject and exploring the unknown corners of a world we thought we knew.
